Car Brakes in Derby - Stoney Cross Garage
Our team of technicians at Stoney Cross Garage in Derby have 150 years of experience between them, and we’ve all seen braking system technology advance and evolve over the last few decades.
Arguably, a vehicle’s brakes are one of the core components of any motorised vehicle, keeping you, your passengers, and other road users, safe, if they’re fitted and maintained correctly. Unfortunately, if they’re not fitted and maintained well then the outcomes can be terrible.
Stoney Cross Garage only fit genuine, quality, brakes; mostly Brembo, or Delphi, and we only ever use metal-free, high-temperature, permanent brake grease (lubrication).
If a garage uses what’s known as “copper grease”, and many do, there is a risk of this melting at high temperatures, causing corrosion from friction due to the metal filings in copper grease.
All our technicians have undergone Brembo Expert training courses, and one of our technicians was an Aston Martin Master Technician prior to joining Stoney Cross Garage and has specialist expertise in high-performance braking systems.
Whatever your requirements are for the braking system on your car or van, Stoney Cross Garage can carry out the work to the very highest standards, using premium parts, ensuring that you have complete peace of mind.
Whether you need discs, pads, callipers, shoes, flexes or pipes, or a complete performance overhaul, we are the garage to use. If you’re unsure what you need we’re always available for a no-obligation chat and advice.
This will vary depending on the quality of your brakes, the number of miles you drive, and how hard you brake. Broadly speaking, brake pads should last between 30,000 and 35,000 miles of mixed urban and motorway driving. Brake discs should last longer but must be maintained properly; a sensible driver should get more than 50,000 miles from one set.
Mileage
The more miles you drive (and therefore brake) the less time your discs and pads will last.
Load
The heavier your vehicle is the greater the friction required from its brakes which is what causes wear. Don’t carry unnecessary weight in the cabin or the boot.
Braking
Braking aggressively will cause faster wear on your braking system components. Pressing the brake pedal less harshly and slowing the vehicle more gradually will extend the life of your brake discs and pads.
Route
Urban driving is far harder on a vehicle’s braking system than motorway driving. Vehicles that do a lot of motorway miles come in less often for new brake discs and pads.
Most modern braking systems are equipped with sensors that illuminate a warning light on the dashboard if a vehicle’s brakes need attention. In addition, you may hear squealing, screeching, and grinding when you brake, along with vibration; these are all signs your brakes aren’t performing as they should and an inspection by a qualified technician at Stoney Cross Garage should be carried out urgently.
